MWFF 2009 Overview

Once again, document.write(“”); this year, the Montreal World Film Festival was an enjoyable experience. There was less Japanese movies available than previous years, but I must admit I found this situation rather convenient because, with two jobs (still writing for the magazine & blogs as well as working full time as assistant-librarian), my schedule was already quite full.
It is really great to have in town an International Festival for the more classical and traditional type of movies. I do enjoy as well the youthful and exciting atmosphere of the Fantasia festival, but, as I am getting older, I realize that I enjoy far more the quiet experience of a movie where the talking and the scenery are the essential parts of the plot instead of the special effects and explosive action. Unfortunately, it seems that Fantasia is getting more and more popular and, due to it’s scheduling in late August and early September, the MWFF seems to attract less young viewers as we see mostly white and grey heads at the MWFF screenings. I have not seen any official attendance numbers (and there’s probably a reason for that), but it really seems that the MWFF has been beaten by Fantasia. However, is it really a bad thing? After all I don’t like to wait in long line, so the more quieter atmosphere around the MWFF suits me quite well. The festival has begun to get more governmental subsidies again and it was showing. There was more events and the show was running much smoothlier than the previous years.
All in all, the quality of the Japanese selection of the festival was quite good:
Be sure to share (Chanto Tsutaeru): When his father is hospitalised for a stomach cancer, Shiro’s is told by the doctor that he should have himself checked too. He soon discovers that he has a cancer ever worse than his father and ends up hoping that his father would die first to save him the pain of losing his son. Shiro never really bonded with his father, who was also his physical education teacher at school, but finds himself desperate to share with him more time and affection. Shiro faces also another dilema: should he tell his fiance that he will die soon? Director Sion Sono (who had gotten us used to crazier and more violent stories) is offering here a surprisingly beautiful and subtle movie. See also our full review. 
Counterfeit (Nisesatsu): The postwar era was a difficult time for most Japanese as they found themselves strapped for cash. When Shingo propose to Kageko, his old school teacher, to make counterfeit money, she is reluctant at first but eventually succumb to the tentation of giving new books to her students. He then recruits the village chief, an old soldier who used to make false Chinese money for the government, as well as the village’s papermaker and photographer. Soon the entire village is part of the conspiracy, but all this cannot end well. Director Yuichi Kimura (Always: Sunset on 3rd Street) is bringing us another great postwar period movie which reflects, this time, on criminal motivation. Dear Doctor (Dia Dakuta): When Soma, freshly graduated from a Tokyo medical school, arrives in a remote mountain village to work as an intern, he is first bored and full of self-doubt. With time his attitude changes as he is inspired by the work of Osamu Ino, the local veteran doctor who manages to take care of the entire village by himself. However, one day, Dr. Ino disappears and, as Soma, the police and the villagers are looking for him, they realize that the doctor they loved so much is not who he said he was. Both funny and sometime sad, this excellent film uses the beautiful Japanese countryside as backdrop to reflect on the situation of rural Japan, where the population (made mostly of elderly) suffers from loneliness. They need less bureaucratic medecine (like it is practiced in the big cities hospitals) and more people to “care” for them (in all meanings of the word: provide medical support, give attention and affection). It also ask the question: is it alright to lie in order to do good? 
Dear my love (60 sai no Love Letter): An anthology of three short stories based on the “Love Letters at Sixty” project that gathered over 80,000 letters “written by one spouse to another voicing unspoken appreciation for lives shared over the years.” A retired construction company executive decides to move out with a younger woman, but his wife comes to see this as a liberating experience. A couple who worked together all their life in their fish store are faced with grave health issues but find strenght in playing music of the Beatles. A widower finds, at the instigation of his daughter, a new life with a translator. Indeed, upon retirement, Japanese couples face many challenges. It’s an interesting subject but I found its treatment in the movie rather ordinary and disappointing. 
The Faceless dead (Kouryo-Shibounin): Misaki is an aspiring writer who works in a supermarket. Through a strange phone call she learns that someone is usurping her identity. Who would use her name and why? The identity thief is unconscious and dying at the hospital—she will die the next day without providing any answers. To Misaki’s surprise she knows her from a previous job at a publishing company. A little investigating reveals that the identity of the hospital’s woman had also been stolen. Obsessed by the mystery she will skip work and follow the trail left by a chestnut lucky charm to the woman real identity and uncover an incredibly tragic story of love and betrayal which will bring her back to her starting point: the supermarket. This movie has all the elements for a good thriller, but the storytelling is weak and there’s a little something missing at the end that leave us on our appetite.
The Hovering blade (Samayou Yaiba): Having already lost his wife to cancer, Nagamine is devastated when his only daughter is raped and murdered by two young punks. Unfortunately, under the protection of the Japanese law, juvenile criminals cannot be prosecuted. Nagamine is infuriated by what he perceives as a gross injustice and would like nothing better than obtain retribution. He gets his chance when a sympathising policeman tips him on the boys’ whereabouts and sets out to hound them desparately… The movie is a good thriller and ends in a tragic twist. It brings strong emotions, but unfortunately that kind of story—sets around the injustice of the Japanese Juvenile Act—has been done many times already.
Villon’s wife (Viyon no Tsuma): Based on an Osamu Dazai’s quasi-autobiographical novel written in 1947, it tells the tangled love story of a married couple. Despite being a talented novelist, Otani is a tormented, drunken man who’s constantly getting in debts and unfaithful to his wife. Aware of his weakness and despressed, he will attempt to commit “double suicide” with one of his mistresses, but gets into trouble because she dies and he survives. In contrast, Sachi is a strong woman, a devoted and loyal wife who accepts Otani as he is and does her best to support him despite everything. She starts working in an izakaya (small bar also serving food) in order to pay off her husband’s debts. Her cheerful beauty makes her popular and she even gets several admirers. This gives her self-confidence, and yet she stays by him when he needs her. But for how long? The film offers a superb photography and director Negishi succeeds to paint a dreamy portrait of the harsh postwar Japan. Unfortunately, the storytelling is sometime awkward and left me with a dissatisfied impression. Surprisingly, Kichitaro Negishi won the WFF 2009 Award for Best Director.
Only two of those movies (Dear Doctor and Villon’s wife) were in official competition, but Villon’s wife managed to get the “Best Director” award (see the full list of awards).
My busy schedule prevented me to film a video of the programmation press conference but I could at least shoot a video of the Dear Doctor screening presentation and press conference (it will be added here as soon as I can manage to edit it).
We are grateful to the festival for bringing us this good selection and hope the 2010 edition will offer even more Japanese movies. See you next year!

Par exemple, document.write(“”); je crois n’avoir jamais voté aux élections municipales car je considérais ce palier de gouvernement comme inutile et sans conséquence sur ma vie (en tant que locataire je ne paie pas de taxes municipales). Mais en travaillant à la ville je suis maintenant beaucoup plus conscient des rouages de ce gouvernement, et surtout de l’incompétence, de l’ineptie ou des inconsistances qui l’accablent (comme tout gouvernement je suppose; c’est quand on est impliqué qu’on le remarque). C’est sûr que ce n’est pas facile de gérer efficacement une grande ville mais il me semble qu’avec un peu de leadership il serait possible de faire beaucoup mieux que les dérapages que l’on voit ces derniers temps. Je crois qu’un peu de changement pourrait améliorer les choses — du moins il serait difficile de faire pire (quoique rien ne pourrait vraiment être fait pour changer la principale cause des problèmes, les arrondissements, sans l’intervention de Québec). Je n’ai toutefois pas encore décidé où ira mon vote, mais une chose est sûr c’est que, cette fois-ci, je vais faire tout mon possible pour aller voter. J’espère que vous en ferez tous de même au 1er novembre. (Pour plus d’information, voir le site de Élection Montréal 2009).
Aussi, je n’ai jamais été guère favorable au syndicalisme. J’ai toujours cru que le syndicalisme est une lame à double tranchant et que si on ne l’utilise pas avec grand soin, parcimonieusement, on risque de se couper soi-même la tête… J’admet que c’est un outil nécessaire pour protéger les droits des travailleurs contre les abus du patronat, mais je crois que les syndicats tombent trop souvent dans le piège de faire des demandes excessives juste pour en avoir plus et s’enlisent parfois dans une mentalité strictement anti-patronale. Si je m’oppose à l’idée d’un syndicalisme réformiste, je suis cependant ouvert au syndicalisme de collaboration, où le syndicat travaille avec l’état et le patronat pour s’assurer que TOUT les membres de la société bénéficient des meilleures conditions possible dans un environment juste et équitable. Sans tomber dans l’aplatventrisme, il est nécessaire parfois, pour le bien commun de tous, de demander moins ou de faire des concessions. De même, il ne faut pas hésiter à prendre une position forte si le patronat a des exigences déraisonables ou refuse carrément de négocier. Cependant, je n’oublierai jamais l’outrage que j’ai ressentis le jour où, alors que je travaillais au salaire minimum, non-syndiqué et sans aucun bénéfices sociaux (vacances, assurances, etc.), et que des employés municipaux payés trois fois plus que moi (et avec presque tout les bénéfices imaginables) ont fait la grève sur une question de salaire, me privant ainsi de services municipaux pour lesquels je payais — ce qui ajoutait l’injure à l’outrage!
En tant qu’employé de la ville, je suis maintenant syndiqué (il s’agit ici du Syndicat des Fonctionnaires Municipaux de Montréal (SFMM), la section locale SCFP-429 du Syndicat Canadien de la Fonction Publique; pour plus d’information voir leur site internet www.sfmm429.qc.ca). Je suis heureux de la sécurité d’emploi que cela me procure et de savoir que je serai défendu en cas d’abus patronal, mais je trouve tout de même que nous payons le syndicat très cher pour des services qui m’apparaissent déficients. Toutes les fois que j’ai eu à faire avec le syndicat j’ai été déçu et insatisfait:
- l’exécutif est difficile à rejoindre (les appels ne sont pas toujours retournés et le message téléphonique du répondeur porte à confusion) et la réponse aux questions est souvent imprécise sinon inexacte.
- l’information aux membres est insuffisante et manque de clarté (le site internet mériterait d’être développé). J’applaudis l’effort d’offrir aux nouveaux membres un cours d’introduction (“Mon Syndicat”), mais celui-ci était trop rudimentaire pour être vraiment utile et l’exercice tenait plus de la propagande que de la pédagogie.
- l’assurance médicale offerte est certes abordable mais ne semble jamais couvrir ce qu’on a vraiment besoin (sauf l’assurance dentaire qui semble excellente). Le but d’une assurance médicale privée est de combler les lacunes de l’assurance-maladie–comme couvrir les frais d’optométrie, les examen en cliniques privées qui ne sont pas offert par le service public ou dont les listes d’attentes sont trop longues–ce qui n’est malheureusement pas le cas avec l’assurance du SFMM (ou alors je suis vraiment malchanceux puisque tout les tests médicaux que j’ai eu à faire depuis que je suis membre n’étaient pas couverts…)
- le SFMM semble faire preuve d’une complaisance excessive envers l’employeur et a manqué à plusieurs reprises à son devoir fondamental de défendre les droits de ses membres: délais inacceptable dans le dossier de l’équité salariale, ententes rétrogrades signées avec certains arrondissements (l’équipe du Colvert a bien présenté ce cas dans leur vol. 2, #3), manque de transparence dans ses opérations, manque de consultation auprès des membres, diminution de la mobilité d’emploi entre les arrondissements, conditions d’éligibilité nébuleuses pour l’obtention de postes, etc.
- la division excessive (et souvent imprécise) des tâches conduit à des situations ridicules (particulièrement entre col bleu et col blanc): employé blâmé pour avoir mis du déglaçant dans une entrée de bibliothèque dangereuse pour les usagers, employé menacé d’un blâme pour avoir “flushé” une toilette mais à qui on demande de remplacer le papier de toilette, etc.
Ce constat désolant suite à mes diverses “expériences” avec le syndicat me fait inévitablement douter du dévouement et de la compétence de l’équipe d’exécutif en place. Avec la venue d’élections, je craignais que leur position ne soit contesté par personne et que rien ne change. Je suis donc fort heureux de constater qu’une nouvelle équipe, “du 109 au 429,” s’oppose à l’ancienne (ironiquement nommée “AccèsCible” !). Espérons que l’équipe “Du 109 au 429” saura faire valoir ses idées auprès des membres afin de remporter les élections du 14 octobre. La fausse pérennité de l’électron?
Depuis longtemps je transcris dans mes carnets mes réflexions personnelles, document.write(“”); un peu comme le faisait Marc-Aurèle, pour tenter de figer dans le souvenirs mes pensées furtives avant qu’elles ne sombrent dans l’oubli. Pendant des années, trop occupé à vivre ma vie, j’ai négligé de le faire et, depuis peu, je blogue au lieu de noircir des carnets. Mais cela semble parfois bien futile. Serait-ce une fausse impression que d’ainsi aspirer à une plus grande pérennité, espérant être lu par un plus grand nombre de lecteurs alors que tout ces mots ne sont qu’électron fragiles et que l’encre sur le papier des carnets survivra, dans l’obscurité certes, certainement plus longtemps? Le blogue a démocratisé la capacité d’expression en donnant à tous une voix, mais celle-ci n’est guère plus entendue que le silence de l’écrit tant qu’elle se perd dans la cacophonie de la toile que tissent les pensées de tous et chacun.

Bloguer ou ne pas bloguer, là est la question. Il y a-t-il plus de noblesse d’âme à subir l’affront des possible commentaires outrageants ou s’armer contre une mer de silence et écrire dans la solitude? Penser, écrire, rien de plus. Simplement épancher nos maux du coeur et les milles petites tortures que la société nous fait subir. Penser, écrire, être lu peut-être. Oui là est l’embarras, car quelle genre de pensées peut-il nous venir lorsque l’on se tiens à l’écart des autres, dans une quelconque mort sociale? Voilà qui devrait mettre fin au débat. Inutile de risquer un ulcère avec ce genre de réflexions futiles. Pourquoi se donner tant de peine à réfléchir, à coucher sur papier nos élucubrations, les écrire et ré-écrire, paufiner notre style si ce n’est la crainte de l’oubli et de la solitude? Ainsi, l’espoir d’être un jour lu et compris par les autres nous fait supporter toutes les douleurs de la création pour nous confier aux silencieux carnets et, parfois également — se détournant de possible entreprises littéraires d’envergures — pour lâchement bloguer les pâles reflets de nos pensées. Defying Common Sense
I really cannot believe that ABC is cancelling “Defying Gravity.” It’s really getting difficult to have good sci-fi on TV these days.

This was an excellent series (without being a masterpiece) and I enjoy it a lot. Luckily I am Canadian and for once (since it is produced by CTV and not ABC) I’ll be able to continue watching a show after a network cancels it!
I was not impressed by the first episode and was a little reluctant because of all the “Grey Anatomy in space” comments, document.write(“”); but I continued watching as it got better and better.
It has an intriguing mystery and it seems relatively well written and fairly well played. There are some length in the storytelling but I like the flashbacks and I think that all good sci-fi should not be all action & sfx, but should include some relatively believable human relationships.
Japan Centenarian population over 40,000
I just read today on my iPod that the Japanese population over 100 year-old had passed 40, document.write(“”); 000 ! And most of them are women.
I was quite surprised. I was expecting a few thousands but not that much. It has doubled in the last six years and, according to U.N. projections, it will nearly reach the million by 2050. It is true that Japan has a quickly aging population and that their life expectency is greater than the average north american… but that’s a lot of very old people. Japan must really prepare for the coming health-care and retirement crisis that it is likely to face soon. Many developped nation will eventually experience a similar problem (although not as acute as it is the case in Japan). Hopefully, the new Japanese government will find ways to prepare for such a situation….
Snow Leopard
The new Macintosh Operating System, document.write(“”); Mac OS X 10.6 also known as “Snow Leopard,” shipped last week (friday August 28th) but I didn’t receive it until monday (August 31st).

In preparation for the update, following some recommendations, I had already made sure last week that my Time Machine backup was up-to-date and that every other devices linked to my Mac (A-TV, iPod) had been properly synced. I had also verified my hard drive, repaired permissions and did a little cleaning (getting rid of a few unused or older apps). Just to make really sure I could easily recover from any problems, I had also purchased an extra 320Gb hard drive that was used to clone the HD of my iMac.

I’ve spend all monday night installing Snow Leopard. It really took most of the evening, so I watched TV while it was installing. I then spend a couple of hours checking the computer for changes and problems. I already knew by reading the tech news that some apps would not work and that most of the changes would be invisible, but I couldn’t help to feel disappointed. I am glad that I paid only $35 CND ($29.95 US) for this upgrade and somewhat I don’t regret getting it. The OS was almost entirely rewritten so it is faster and lighter, but the speed increase is not really noticeable. And all the improvements (on the visual appearance, on the performance or the added fonctionnality) are rather small. Overall, it is mostly the same than Leopard, but better. However, there’s no new fonctions that make me exclaim in joy and the new OS generates several problems. It is far from the crisis that I experienced when installing Mac OS 6 and 7, but still those little problems end up being quite an annoyance.
Here’s a quick list of the problems that I experienced:
- Norton Anti-Virus 11.0.2 is broken.
- Mail app is behaving strangely.
- iCal cannot publish Calendars anymore.
For Norton Anti-Virus there is nothing I can do but wait for Symantec to released an updated version that fixes the bug. However, I am amazed that such a big company, who is handling the security for so many people’s computer, would let a problem like this happen. It is true that Snow Leopard was released ealier than expected, but the OS was seeded to developpers several months ago for them to test it and make sure their softwares would still work properly after the update. Clearly, Symantec has failed us. According to their forum, NAV 11.0.3 update should be available around mid-September…
After installing Snow Leopard, one of my mail server was at first not responding, but it worked after a while. Then I noticed that some emails were not appearing where they should in the email’s list of the Mail app. I first thought “well, I have lots of emails—in fact two years worth of emails—so it might be a little heavy fo the app and cause it to be slow and behave strangely.” Therefore I decided to backup and eliminate most of the older emails. First, I archived and zipped all my mailboxes (so I could re-import them later if necessary). Then I also upgraded Mail Steward 7.9.8 to 8.2.5 (at the cost of $20) to archive all my mailboxes in a way that would be searchable. Finally, I deleted all my old emails. I thought it did the trick, but I recently noticed that some emails are still sometime not listed, but they reappear if I refresh the window. I haven’t seen that problem mentioned by anyone else (someone did mention problems with the Mail app but it seems to be a different bug). It is not too much of a problem, but it is annoying and hopefully it will be corrected in a future update.
After installing Snow Leopard, I also noticed that my exported iCal calendar were not working anymore. I was getting a “calendar cannot be found” error message from MobileMe. According to the tech news sites, a bug seems to prevent calendars with all-day events to be properly published. After searching the web, I found a work-around using iCal Exchange to publish the calendar on Google Calendar instead. On the Apple forums, someone suggest that switching iCal from 64-bit to 32-bit mode will temporarily fix the problem. I haven’t tried this fix yet and I am rather waiting for an Apple update.
Finally, some of the applications that I am currently using are still PowerPC apps. For some, I’ve found updated version for Intel Macs, but for a few apps there are no Intel or Universal version. For some there is simply no alternative than continue to use Rosetta (ReadIris Pro 11 for example) and for others I will have to consider purchasing alternative softwares (for example: updating Toast 6 Titanium with Roxio Toast 10 for $80, or replacing Appleworks 6 with Bento 2 for about $50).
Update: On September 9th, in Apple “It’s Only Rock and Roll” event, Steve Job announced iTunes 9, new iPod models and the iPhone / iPod Touch OS 3.1.1. Similarly to Snow Leopard, the free iPod Touch OS update is bringing just a few disappointing improvements and, according to some, a few problems. In my case, the iPod seems to have batteries problem recently. Goes from fully charged to nearly empty so it shuts down and is unable to reboot until it’s recharged. Annoying.
Update: On September 10th, Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.1 but it doesn’t seem to fix any of my problems. Hopefully it will come with the next update.
Update: On September 16th, the Symantec forum announces the release of NAV 11.0.3. I ran LiveUpdate immediately and after a longer than usual download, NAV installs and request a reboot. It now seems to work. They announced another update, 11.1, for late October.
Livres numériques en français
Ces dernières années nous avons vu apparaitre aux États-Unis une abondance de sites internet offrant des livres numériques (les fameux eBooks): Amazon.com, document.write(“”); Barnes & Noble, Borders, Sony et beaucoup d’autres. Protoculture offre déjà depuis plusieurs années ses titres les plus récents en format numérique.

De telles boutiques virtuelles ont également commencé à faire leur apparition en France (comme Numilog ou le site de la FNAC par exemple, quoique nos cousins Européens semblent plus portés vers les documents gratuits comme c’est le cas avec Gallica) mais jusqu’à très récemment il n’y avait rien pour le marché francophone nord-américain.
The Gazette nous apprends ce matin que Archambault et Sony se sont associé pour nous offrir une boutique virtuelle de livres numériques: Jelis.ca.
Cela permettra à Sony de vendre son lecteur électronique au Québec (quoiqu’un lecteur n’est pas nécessaire pour lire les titres acheté sur Jelis.ca) et à Archambault d’entamer un marché encore vierge puisque Kindle, le lecteur électronique d’Amazon, n’est pas disponible à l’extérieur des USA.
Il est intéressant de noter que plusieurs titres de l’éditeur de genres Alire sont disponible sur Jelis.ca.
Je ne crois pas que le livre imprimé soit menacé par le livre numérique, qui ne représente qu’un nouveau format de publication comme l’est le livre de poche ou le livre audio. Et l’expension du marché du livre numérique est grandement limitée par les prix des lecteurs électroniques ($260 à $600 dépendant des cas) et celui des livres numériques eux-même. En effet, dans la plupart des boutiques virtuelles de livres numériques, ceux-ci sont vendu au même prix que le livre imprimé, ce qui est ridicule considérant que ce produit n’encourt aucun coût d’impression et des frais de distribution moindre (seulement le pourcentage que prends le détaillant virtuel). Théoriquement, un tel format devrait offrir à l’éditeur un revenu plus grand et, au lecteur, un coût d’achat moindre (d’à peu près 30%). Mais ce n’est pas encore le cas. Toutefois, c’est un format qui a de l’avenir.
