On October 1st the population of Quebec will have to vote to put their favourite candidates in the National Assembly. I find myself in quite an electoral conundrum since the lack of leadership makes it impossible to find anyone worth of my support. Every party has good ideas, but also so many stupid ones. I began this reflection when my union started a campaign advocating not voting for either the Liberals or the CAQ because “they are all the same” and that “we deserve better”… But if not them, who?

If you have followed the sunflower theft / case / saga, you’ll be glad to know that the case is finally closed (I hope). After nearly a month, the police finally intervened by visiting the culprit. He confessed his crime and said he was sorry. Apparently, he was so shocked & surprised to be caught that he was shaking. He also promised to return the stolen property to all the places he had taken them. Our stolen pots and sunflowers were returned by the police. I noticed the next day that the flowers stolen from the city’s flower beds were back. We didn’t press charge, but if he ever do us wrong again he would be in serious jeopardy. It was a great occasion to demonstrate my detective skills (elementary my dear Watson!), but now I can finally relax and start to enjoy the flowers again!

Si vous avez suivi le vol / l’affaire / la saga des tournesols, vous serez heureux d’apprendre que l’histoire est finalement close (j’espère). Après près d’un mois, la police est finalement intervenue en visitant le coupable. Il a avoué son crime et a dit qu’il était désolé. Apparemment, il était tellement choqué et surpris d’être pris qu’il en tremblait. Il a également promis de rendre les biens volés à tous les endroits où il les avait pris. Nos pots et tournesols volés ont été retournés par la police. J’ai remarqué le lendemain que les fleurs volées dans les parterres de la ville étaient de retour. Nous n’avons pas porté plainte contre lui, mais s’il nous faisait du tors à nouveau, il se retrouverait vraiment dans le trouble. Ce fut l’occasion idéale de faire preuve de mes habilités de détective (élémentaire ma chère Watson!), mais maintenant, je peux enfin me détendre et recommencer à apprécier les fleurs!

Against Facebook
I am really getting fed up with Facebook. It is an exceedingly time-consuming activity (chronophagios) that really gives little rewards — I means besides watching cat videos and stalking (um, I means, keeping in contact with) friends. More and more it has become the kingdom of fake news, as people constantly pass their expressed opinions as news (or as news-worthy).
Not only Facebook is doing very little to prevent foreign agencies to try to influence our minds through fake posting or advertising but, at the same time, they block legitimate ads from museums around the world because it is deemed offensive or subversive ! Incredible! How comes a bunch a geeks who know so little about the world become arbiters of morality and political decency ? They’re such a great influence over our minds (and our children’s minds) and yet, there is no one to oversee their policies? Inacceptable!
Of course, I would not be so inflamed by their ignominious policies if I would not have been touched personally by it. I am busy and I don’t have time to post on my blog, on Facebook, on Tweeter, on Instagram, etc. So I concentrate on what’s the most important to me (the medium that I can control the most) — my blog — and I just automatically repeat each (or most) post on the other social media to increase diffusion of my art and thoughts. However, a recent change in policies brought by Facebook is blocking this automatic reposting! What? They let the Russian pass through but they block my book reviews and cats’ pictures?! That’s unconscionable !
That I learned recently from a WordPress email:
“Starting August 1, 2018, third-party tools can no longer share posts automatically to Facebook Profiles. This includes Publicize, the WordPress.com tool that connects your site to major social media platforms (like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook).”
They explain that if my content is linked to a Facebook Profile (a personal account), then Publicize will no longer be able to share my posts to Facebook, but it will still work if it’s a Facebook Page (public profiles allowing “artists, public figures, businesses, brands, organizations and nonprofits connect with their fans or customers”) that is connected to my site. I have only two options if I still want my Facebook followers to see my posts : create a link manually or convert my Facebook Profile to a Page ! They continue:
While Facebook says it is introducing this change to improve their platform and prevent the misuse of personal profiles, we believe that eliminating cross-posting from WordPress is another step back in Facebook’s support of the open web, especially since it affects people’s ability to interact with their network (unless they’re willing to pay for visibility) We know that this might cause a disruption in the way you and your Facebook followers interact, and if you’d like to share your concerns with Facebook, we urge you to head to their Help Community to speak out.
Damn you Facebook! Improving your platform? You means improving your profits by making changes that would favour the commercial use of your application! What about the users, the people who made your product famous (and create its value) ? Oh, yes, that’s true: since we know that WE are your product it is getting more difficult to fleece us, so you reorient your business model!
So, if you were wondering why I am posting very little on Facebook lately, well, that’s the reason. Now, I will probably share my posts manually for a while (for the most important entries) and maybe consider to eventually create a Page, but I am also quite seriously considering withdrawing completely from Facebook…

Notable News (w23-w31)
Since the last update, over two months ago, so much has happened.
On the domestic front, it seems that I ran out of karma points because a series of unfortunate events kept happening to me, including frustratingly bad customer service experiences: I had trouble getting my bag of weekly flyers delivered, after eight long months the contractor finally came to finish the landscaping work in the backyard so I could work (hard) to set up the garden, and then the water heater broke down! Everything was just a big pain in the ass! I ended up so stressed and distressed by the whole ordeal that I forgot to do the accounting and pay the bills! This had never happened to me in fifteen years!

However, that was not the end of it. Work is usually a real nut house where we have to run around like crazy, doing absurd stuff. Under normal circumstances it is already demoralizing and exhausting. But we had to go at it during a heat wave, for a whole week! We had a few days of respite and then, the air conditioning broke down—for another week! We were working at temperature between 27° C and 30° C, with relative humidity of 50-55% ! If you calculate the humidity factor (the way that it’s normally done on weather channels) it felt like working at temperature between 35° C and nearly 40° C ! (Of course, according to the charts used by management, it was barely over 33° C and we shouldn’t even brake a sweat! For them it was just uncomfortable conditions!). Damn it, we are working in a library, not a sweat shop! Management brought huge fans, but if you move hot air, it is still just hot air — in a very noisy environment.
If it was just working at a desk with a fan in the face it would probably be tolerable, but we are standing up and moving around a lot to serve customers (lending, shelving and processing books, etc.) — contrary to what most people believe it is a very physical work. At my age and with my health I cannot work in such conditions for a long duration. One day, I was tired and feeling dizzy (the head-librarian had already left and a couple of colleagues were not feeling well either) so I decided to also leave work early. We were threatened of “consequences” (disciplinary measures) by management for doing so. We endured for the rest of the week, but, in the end, I couldn’t take it anymore, I was exhausted (completely out of energy), having sore throat, migraine and ear ache, so I took a day off. I just don’t get it: why’s this obstinacy to force employees to work in unbearable conditions? Where is decency and respect of the workers? That’s what upsets me the most: absurd decisions and disrespect… I get it that there is nothing in the labor law (health & security) that prevent work in extreme heat conditions, but it is just common sense and thoughtfulness not to subject your employees to such suffering! Then again, why should I be surprised of such contempt for the workers?
At the same time, I had to deal with some garden theft which became “the sunflowers’ affair” and evolved into a real saga. Finally, as I was ready to blow a gasket, my blood pressure medication was recalled due to contamination with a potential carcinogen (the generic version is made in China, no wonder)! I had trouble at first to get the pharmacy to replace it for free, but now there is a class-action lawsuit being organized…
My mind elsewhere !
Thankfully, there was a few positive events to brighten my mood, like an occasional trip to the botanical garden or the park, Apple announcing their incoming new operating systems (iOS 12 and macOS 10.14 Mojave) or finally being able to finish watching the latest seasons of Poldark and McMafia. Strangely, as I handled all the bad karma with relatively great zen, I managed to write comments on quite a bunch of stuff (books, TV series and movies): The Dark Tower, The Terror, Crapule, American Made, Victoria & Abdul, Un simple monde, Le chat du louvre 1-2, Black Panther, Isabella Bird: femme exploratrice 1-2, Alien Resurrection & Alien: Covenant, Pline 5, Ad Astra 4-5, Justice League, Batman v Superman, Jumanji, Giacomo Foscari 1, Nos yeux fermés, Your name., In this corner of the world, and The Mummy. Fortunately, reading (or alternatively watching TV) and writing (comments, rants or even poetry) is a great help to bring my mind elsewhere!
On the world stage, we saw the usual fires, floods, volcanoes, storms, kids trapped in a cave, a couple of summits (G7 & North Korea), the World Cup, water was found on Mars and each day kept bringing more Trump insanities. If I wouldn’t know better I could think that Trump is the antechrist and that the end of the world is near! But, no, it’s just our daily lives in the 21st century… I just don’t understand: in 1953 the Rosenberg were tried and executed simply for spying for the Soviets; now, some politicians conspired with the Russians to interfere in the U.S. elections, make their own businesses profits, as well as contribute to undermine western democracies and absolutely NO uproar is being made about it? Delirant isti americani !

The sunflowers saga / La saga des tournesols
“The sunflower theft” and “The sunflower case” continue into a real saga… There was no theft on the third night but in the morning the suspect, while walking his dogs with his partner, strolled down the street to survey his future targets! Many sunflowers are about to bloom and I am afraid that he will be back soon! I don’t have much hope that the police will do anything soon, so what can we do to stop him ? (I mean beside welcoming him with a two by four — I know: we must not take justice into our own hands; maybe we could scare him by saying we are on to him?). We have a better view of him during daylight. It’s definitely the same miscreant. I noticed he had the right leg in a cast (no wonder he was walking funny). [la version française suit le vidéo]
My wife went to have a look near the lair of the suspect and positively recognized her flowers and pots. There is very little doubt in my mind now that he is the one who stole and vandalized our property. Here are pictures of his front and back yards and we can clearly see sunflowers and many flowers in pots (mostly in the backyard).

“Le tournesol volé” et “L’affaire tournesol” se poursuivent en une véritable saga… Rien n’a été volé durant la troisième nuit, mais au matin le suspect, tout en promenant ses chiens avec sa conjointe, a descendu la rue pour repérer ses prochaines cibles! Plusieurs de nos tournesols sont sur le point de fleurir et je crains qu’il ne sévisse à nouveau très bientôt. Je n’ai pas grand espoir que la police fasse quoi que ce soit de sitôt alors que peut-on faire pour arrêter l’hécatombe dans notre jardin? ( à part, bien sûr, le surprendre avec un deux par quatre dans la face — je sais: ce n’est pas bien de se faire justice soi-même; peut-être que lui dire qu’on l’a à l’oeil lui ferait peur?). On le voit mieux durant le jour et c’est définitivement le même scélérat. A noter qu’il a la jambe droite dans le plâtre (ça explique sans doute sa démarche bizarre).
Ma femme est allé faire un tour l’autre soir près de l’antre du suspect et elle est positive qu’on y trouve ses fleurs et ses pots. Je n’ai plus beaucoup de doute qu’il s’agit bel et bien de la personne qui a volé et vandalisé notre propriété. Following “The sunflower thief”, this video shows security footage of the thief coming back the very next night (2018/07/14, 3:02 am) to steal more sunflowers! Two days in a row! What a real scoundrel! Nobody respects anything anymore, that’s sickening! [ la version française suit ]
This time, I noticed the rascal seems to have a slight beard and a man bun (also he sometimes walks funny). If you know this scumbag, please contact me or the police (a police report has already been filed at station 30 — although the clerk didn’t seem enthusiastic). The varmint is plaguing the whole neighbourhood and I am not the only victim (as seen on the video; I also heard some neighbours complained about it). This type of theft / vandalizing of our property (flower or vegetable gardens) MUST NOT be tolerated no matter how small it may seem! I also think I might have localized the bastard: a neighbour looks A LOT like him; more so he had yesterday a sunflower in his backyard in a pot that looked quite familiar and a few more pots and sunflowers appeared today… Citizens of the neighbourhood, lets act to protect not only our properties but also the greenery that embellishes our environment!

Cette fois, j’ai remarqué que le voyou semble avoir une légère barbe et un chignon (il a aussi une démarche bizarre). Si vous connaissez ce salaud, veuillez communiquer avec moi ou avec la police (un rapport de police a déjà été déposé au poste 30 — bien que le greffier n’ait pas semblé enthousiaste). Cette vermine sévit dans tout le quartier et je ne suis pas la seule victime (comme on peut le voir sur la vidéo, j’ai aussi entendu des voisins s’en plaindre). Ce type de vol / vandalisme de notre propriété (jardins de fleurs ou de légumes) NE DOIT PAS être toléré, peu importe son importance! Je pense aussi avoir localiser l’ostie d’BS: un voisin lui ressemble beaucoup; de plus il avait hier un tournesol dans sa cour arrière dans un pot qui avait l’air assez familier et quelques pots et des tournesols de plus sont apparus aujourd’hui … Citoyens du quartier, agissons pour protéger non seulement nos propriétés mais aussi la verdure qui embellie notre environment!

My wife finds solace in gardening. Last night (2018/07/13, 2:42 am), some miscreant stole her first blooming sunflower of the year from our front yard in St-Michel borough. It was about 1.3m / 50″ tall, in a 25cm / 10″ green pot. The suspect looks like a white male, skinny and medium height, smoker, waring baseball cap and shorts. If you have any information please contact me. It’s really a shame! People nowadays definitely have no scruples!

La nuit dernière (2018/07/13, 2:42 am), un scélérat a volé son premier tournesol à fleurir cette année dans notre cour avant de l’arrondissement St-Michel. Il mesurait environ 1,3 m / 50 po de hauteur, dans un pot vert de 25 cm / 10 po. Le suspect ressemble à un homme blanc, mince et de grandeur moyenne, fumeur, portant une casquette et un short. Customer service is dead!
It seems that wherever we go these days companies don’t care about customer service. Either they have a quasi monopole and it’s irrelevant or, despite a competitive environment, nobody seems to pay attention to the need or satisfaction of the customer. It must be really bad in my area — or I am a VERY unlucky customer — because I keep having those horrible experiences with customer service.
Beside the notoriously bad customer service of telecom companies like Bell (about which I have talked many times — their Fibe TV is superb but their wi-fi is quite shitty and their tech service doesn’t seem to care — unless they can sell you extra service or device that supposedly would improve the situation) I can easily mention three or four companies that gave me bad service just in the last couple of weeks!

I seems now, after nearly a week, I am finally done with the computer set ups. Of course, it wasn’t without pain and efforts.
First, despite the promises of the “Genius” that served me at the Apple Store, the technician had installed the *previous* macOS (10.12) instead of the latest one (10.13.3). It speaks volume on the heaviness of High Sierra when Apple’s own technicians want to save time (and cut corners) by avoiding its installation! Therefore I had to spent the first evening with my brand new/refurbished MacBook Pro (June 2017) updating the operating system. To add injury to the insult, Apple pushed the 10.13.4 update the *very* next day, so I had to go through the whole updating process AGAIN!
The next step was to order a stand, a bunch of cables and hard drives to install the MBP at my desk, with a larger monitor, wireless keyboard & mouse, as well as a Time Machine backup and a clone of the hard drive (just in case…). Finally, I had to install all the necessary software for my work (Norton Security, MS Office, LibreOffice, Photoshop, GIMP, VMware Fusion, DropBox, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.) and set up iCoud (because the 250 Gb SSD storage of the MBP is a little tight for me; from now on I will store all needed (texts, images) files in iCloud (200 Gb) and be able to access them from ANY devices!).
Then I moved the old iMac from my desk to the salon where it will become the new, more performing, media center. I needed a new HDMI cable to hook it up to the TV and had to install all the necessary software needed to perform that task (VLC, Kodi, Transmission, RipIt, Flixter, PopCorn, Toast, etc.).
The Mac-Mini was then moved from the salon to the bedroom to serve as secondary media center, along the Apple TV, for late night viewings. Not much install needed there besides hooking it up to the TV and to a wireless keyboard and trackpad (instead of a mouse).
It was a long process and I encountered only ONE major problem. At some point, and without any obvious reasons, all the pinned notes (the most important of course!) in the Notes app simply disappeared without a trace. They were not deleted. They just disappeared. And I couldn’t recover them. Very annoying! I had to performed a convoluted recovery process where I isolated the iMac from the internet (to prevent Notes from synching) and copied all the vanished notes into TextEdit in order to recreate them in Notes. Then the MBP Notes refused to synch with iCloud, so I had to turn it off and on, causing it to erase and re-download all the iCloud content again. Nothing more was lost and now everything seems to work (but, still, now I’ll maintain a backup of the notes, just to be sure).
And voilà! Now I can finally write.
Unfortunately (since I also tested my new media center by catching up on my viewings [The Walking Dead S08 eps 13-15, When calls the heart S05 eps 5-7, Homeland S07 eps 4-8, The Durrells S03 eps 3-4, Little Women eps 1-3 and The Terror ep 1], did the laundry and took at least one walk in the park) I don’t have much time left to write anything… As usual.
The next step: solving the damn weak and spotty wifi problem, do many projects around the house (spring cleaning, prepping the backyard for the summer, start gardening, etc.), read more, and, of course, try to catch up a little on my writing!

Just to recapitulate: in the last month, I’ve been locked out of my blog a couple of times (it seems to have been a browser issue but a computer reboot solved the problem), fluctuation in the electricity made the lights flickers like all hell was breaking loose (called Hydro Q and so far it has stopped), the WiFi keeps being weak and spotty (it just Bell; I tried just about everything [like extenders and Bell’s pods] without success) and sometimes just stops completely (until I reset the marvellous Bell Home Hub 3000), my computer became slow and unresponsive until the hard drive completely died (I had the HD changed but nevertheless bought a MacBook Pro to replace my aging iMac), the toaster-oven caught in fire (had to replace it) and my absurd and insane work place is making me nuts (but I’m dealing better with it)!
As a result I’ve spent the last three week-ends trying to solve problems and not at all relaxing (like sleeping, writing or watching TV). I don’t sleep well, I have various digestion’s problems, it hurts all over (my back, my knee, my ankle — as well as in unmentionable places — as the stress piles up). I am exhausted, fed up, at my wits’ end…
I need to rest!
Hopefully an extra day off spent doing a little writing, TV watching and tending of the yard will do the trick.

The lights keeps flickering… The WiFi is often spotty and unreliable… And now my iMac is a zombie! Isn’t there anything working properly anymore ?!!
Ever since the last major OS update, the iMac started freezing now and then. Actually : almost every hour! So, I was suspecting a problem with Time Machine (it was freezing just as TM was about to start an incremental backup). I turned TM off, which didn’t totally solved the problem but considerably reduced its frequency.
Then, yesterday night, out of the blue, the iMac started to freeze again every few minutes. It slowed down to a slow pace and all applications refused to start and giving a “this application is not responding” instead (well, Safari was painstakingly loading).
My computer is a late 2012 iMac, with a 21.5 inches screen, 2.9 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM, 1.12 TB Fusion Drive and it is running MacOS 10.13.3. I admit, it’s already more than five years old. Any suggestion to solve this problem?
I unplugged all peripherals and restarted several times with no change. Finally, I decided to restart in Safe Mode and ran a few diagnostics, repaired the drive, checked for virus with Norton Security, but everything seemed normal save that the problem was PERSISTING even in Safe Mode !
Therefore, could it means that’s an hardware problem rather than software? Maybe the last update didn’t play well with the Fusion Drive, like I’ve heard on some board?
Until I fix this (or replace my iMac with something new — not better, you can’t get that these days), I am stuck working on my even older Mac Mini (Mid 2010) or on my iPad ! I guess I know now where this year’s tax return will go…
Un parc en hiver
C’était une belle journée pour prendre une marche dans le parc. Il ne faisait pas trop froid (un degré au dessus-de zéro) et le ciel était d’un riche bleu avec juste un peu de nuages. Cela faisait plusieurs semaines que je n’avais pas déambulé dans le parc, car avec la pluie (et le gel / dégel) les sentiers étaient trop glacés pour que la marche y soit reposante…
Je ne veux pas trop critiquer la nouvelle administration municipale (je suis de ceux qui croient que la hausse de taxes était nécessaire et qu’il faut donner à la nouvelle équipe le temps de faire ses preuves et d’apprendre de ses erreurs), toutefois je dois admettre que, comme les rues, les sentiers du parc étaient mieux déneigés par les années passées (du moins le sentier polyvalent et périphérique, puisque que les autres sentiers n’ont ouvert qu’à la fin d’août)… C’est sans doute excellent pour les raquetteurs et les skieurs de fond, mais un peu difficile pour les coureurs et les promeneurs du dimanche qui prennent une petite marche de santé en admirant la grandiose nature à laquelle nous sommes des plus reconnaissant d’enrichir notre urbanité.
J’ai tout de même hâte au printemps pour voir tout cela tapissé de fleurs et habité de criquets, bourdons, papillons et volatiles en tout genre! Pour l’instant ce n’est qu’un canevas blanc, un désert propre et javellisé, un écrin pour des boules de neige métallisées et un azur profond et inspirant, où l’on va pour purifier nos esprits citadins empesés par une vie à toute allure… Que c’est beau, toute de même, un parc en hiver.

Does that ring a bell?
Bell offers a notoriously bad service to its customers. In fact, as I mentioned recently, the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services tells us that 32% of all complaints from Canadian consumers are related to Bell! I experienced this personally numerous times (I once had five services with them [phone, cellphone, internet, web hosting and satellite TV] and cancelled it all because of a really bad customer service!). Recently, after switching internet & TV service from Videotron to Bell, my VoIP phone from a third party stopped working properly and, when I called Bell technical service, I was told that they didn’t support VoIP phone and that if I wanted a good phone service I should use theirs! Also, as soon as I started using their wi-fi, half my numerous devices using internet (computers, iPhone, iPad, VoIP phone, thermostat, WeMo Insight & Switch, Philips Hue lights, printer, garage door opener, security cameras, etc. — I have over twenty different devices requiring wi-fi!) wouldn’t connect properly through their WPS and it took me a long time to figure a way to have everything working in a decent and almost stable way (using a combination of DMZ and MAC filtering — as well as using my sister’s Videotron‘s wi-fi!). Clearly, this bad service thing is not a myth… At least it has a ring of truth, but I am sure many other people can confirm that.
I always wondered how come that a company with such a bad reputation would, first, manage to stay in business and, second, never make any attempt to improve either their service or reputation. This week, I just figured it all: why improve your crappy service when you can just charge your customers for an improved premium service ?!
For instance, if you are not satisfied with the crappy-almost-inexistant technical service, you can simply subscribe to their “Bell Tech Expert” service for only $6.00 per month! There’s no incentive for them to offer a good service if they are making money with the premium service option!
Or, if you find their crappy, unstable wi-fi service unbearable, you can simply subscribe to their “Whole Home Wi-Fi” service that uses a network of pods plugins that works with the Home Hub 3000 to strengthen and optimize the wi-fi! Only for $5.00 per month extra!
Some people will put up with the crappy service and some will pay up for the extra (real) service. You subscribe to Bell because (you think) they offer more than the competitor for a much cheaper price, but you end up paying more anyway for what should be standard service…

Unfortunately, I could never go back to Videotron’s TV service because Bell’s system is really amazing. It’s only their wi-fi (and customer service) that’s totally crap. Unfortunately, this makes their offers of Wi-Fi pods very tempting…
But at least, now, the Bell’s secret is out of the bag!

Élagage: suite et fin
Au début de décembre j’ai du écrire à la mairie d’arrondissement car je tentais sans succès depuis le début de l’été de faire élaguer un arbre dont une branche s’appuyait dangereusement sur le fil électrique.
Et bien, c’est maintenant fait. Les élagueurs sont venu faire le travail ce matin. Voir les commentaires du billet original pour les détails sur le déroulement des travaux…

Lettre aux élus: Problème d’élagage
Mme la mairesse d’arrondissement,
M. le conseiller du district,
Préambule:
Une branche de l’arbre en face de chez moi s’appui dangereusement sur le fil électrique depuis un bon bout de temps. Ce printemps j’ai remarqué que cela était encore plus prononcé qu’avant et je craignais que le mouvement de l’arbre avec le vent finisse par abimer ou arracher le fil.
J’ai donc appelé Hydro-Québec pour demander de couper la branche. On m’a répondu que si j’avais encore de l’électricité et que si l’arbre n’était pas en feu cela ne les concernait pas.
Au début de l’été (en mai, je crois), j’ai appelé la ville (au 311) pour expliquer la situation et demander que la branche soit coupée. C’est un frêne localisé en bordure du trottoir et qui a été traité par la ville contre l’agrile. La ville considère donc que l’arbre leur appartient. On ne m’a pas donné de numéro de dossier au moment de l’appel. Ma soeur, qui habite le deuxième étage du duplex que nous possédons en co-propriété, a également appelé à deux reprises au cours de l’été (le 21 août et le 21 septembre). Aucune action n’a été entreprise par la ville et personne ne nous a contacté pour faire un suivi sur le problème.

Une nouvelle qui résonne
Tous les gens qui ont eut à se plaindre à un moment ou l’autre de l’entreprise Bell Canada (et j’imagine qu’il y en a beaucoup) seront heureux d’apprendre que, selon l’émission La Facture de Radio-Canada, la meilleure place pour se plaindre de Bell est la Commission des plaintes relatives aux services de télécom-télévision (CRTC, Wikipedia). Le CPRST règlerait 90% des plaintes qu’ils reçoivent relatives à Bell et ce gratuitement et dans un délai de moins de trente jours! Bell génère d’ailleurs 32% du total des plaintes de consommateurs canadiens! Une information à retenir pour quand il y aura quelque chose qui cloche dans vos services de télécommunications !

Inauguration du parc
Ce matin dans ma boite à lettre j’ai trouvé une publicité annonçant l’inauguration du Parc Frédéric-Back dans un peu moins de deux semaine, le samedi 26 août dès midi. C’est donc maintenant officielle!
La cérémonie, qui se déroulera dans le secteur Boisé Est (angle 2e avenue et rue Deville), inclura une performance d’ouverture, le dévoilement de l’oeuvre de mémoire (?), des activités ludiques pour grands et petits ainsi qu’un spectacle de clôture en soirée.
Aussi, tous les samedis de septembre, dès 11h, nous pourrons profiter de pique-niques champêtres, de maïs gratuit, de nombreuses activités ludiques et autres surprises!
C’est un peu tard pour ouvrir un parc mais, bon, la ville se rattrape en offrant une programmation spéciale pour la rentrée. Les travaux sont théoriquement terminés depuis le printemps (et je n’y ai pas vu beaucoup d’activité durant l’été) alors je ne comprend pas pourquoi attendre aussi tard pour en faire l’ouverture. Et malgré tout, le parc ne me semble pas encore tout à fait prêt: hautes herbes, belvédères obstrués par les arbres, etc., et le tout est encore clôturé mur à mur… Enfin, c’est un début!

Lettre à l’arrondissement
Mme la mairesse d’arrondissement
M. le conseiller de Saint-Michel,
J’ai quelques questions que j’espère vous aurez, cette fois, l’obligeance (sinon la décence) de répondre.
En novembre dernier, suite à une annonce dans le journal de St-Michel (“Toujours à l’écoute de vos besoins, nous vous invitons à nous faire part de vos demandes et commentaires”) qui incitait les citoyens à envoyer leur questions par courriel à leurs conseillers (jusqu’alors, quand j’avais un problème, je me déplaçais au bureau de mon conseiller — que je n’ai jamais rencontré par ailleurs mais sa secrétaire à toujours fait en sorte que les problèmes soient réglés de façon satisfaisante), je vous ai écrit au sujet d’un grave problème de gestion animalière dans notre arrondissement (j’ai par la suite publié cette lettre sur mon blogue et ma soeur, co-signataire, vous l’a très récemment envoyé de nouveau). Je n’ai jamais eu de réponse, ni même d’accusé-réception!
Je ne vous répèterai pas ici le contenu de la lettre (pour cela je vous réfère à mon blogue où le sujet est abondamment documenté par des hyper-liens) mais je me permet d’insister sur le fait que, cette année, la situation est pire: une dizaine de chats errants (deux femelles, cinq chatons, un mâle dominant et deux prétendants) font un véritable ravage dans le jardin de ma cour arrière. Non seulement la situation était-elle devenue intolérable mais apparemment les règlements municipaux nous menaces d’amendes si l’on “tolère” des animaux errants dans notre cour (?!).
Je n’ai donc pas eut le choix d’attraper tout ce beau monde (du moins les femelles et les chatons) mais maintenant qu’en faire? Les refuges privés sont toujours bondés (particulièrement à ce temps-ci de l’année où il y a beaucoup d’animaux abandonnés), c’est très difficile de trouver de bons samaritains pour adopter autant de chats et la seule solution officielle offerte est le Berger Blanc, qui a très mauvaise réputation (l’an dernier un employé m’a avoué que 100% des animaux errants y étaient euthanasiés) et que je me refuse à utiliser. J’espère trouver une place pas trop chère pour faire stériliser les deux femelles (et ensuite relâcher au moins la plus vieille des deux, sinon les deux, pour faire un TNR — “trap, neuter & return”) et trouver des gens pour adopter les chatons. Aux États-Unis et aux Canada anglais la plupart des villes ont des programmes subventionnés pour la stérilisation gratuite ou à bas prix ($15-$20) pour les animaux errants mais ici cela va me coûter autour de $60-$80 chacune! Avez-vous des suggestions?
Donc, suite à ce trop long préambule de contexte (je m’en excuse), j’aimerais bien que vous répondiez à ces deux questions:
- Comment cela se fait-il que notre arrondissement fasse affaire avec le refuge qui a la pire des réputations, le Berger Blanc, et non avec la SPCA comme beaucoup d’arrondissements environnants (Anjou, Montréal-Nord, Plateau, Rosemont, etc.)? Si VSP faisait affaire avec la SPCA cela serait déjà un peu mieux…
- Comment se fait-il que la ville repousse sans cesse la construction de son propre refuge animalier (dans notre arrondissement)? Aux dernières nouvelles il était maintenant annoncé pour 2019 !!!
Tant qu’à vous écrire j’aurais encore quelques questions sur d’autres sujets:
- Pourquoi ouvrir le secteur Boisé Est du Parc Frédéric-Back si tard (le 26 août) alors que c’était initialement annoncé pour le printemps ? À la fin d’août, cela ne laisse plus beaucoup de temps pour en profiter…
- Pourquoi sans cesse reporter l’ouverture complète du Parc Frédéric-Back ? Jusqu’à récemment il était question de 2020 et maintenant c’est rendu en 2023 !! La ville a vraiment des problèmes à tenir des échéanciers! Même les sections supposément ouverte ne semblent pas tout à fait complétées…
Comme vous le voyez je ne me gène pas pour commenter les absurdités municipales que j’observe que ce soit des problèmes de déneigement ou la politique de contraventions abusives sur Saint-Roch…

Cats stories
A large part of my ten-day vacation was about taking care of the cat problem (which I alluded to in a recent “notable news” post). Just for the fun of it, yesterday I edited a short video showing the extent of the problem. They are cute but that many cats is just too much. Now that they are captured, we just have to find them new families where they can have a happy and meaningful life. That’s the hard part since, as I said, our only official option is the Berger Blanc (and it’s quite frustrating that the city bylaws threaten us of fines for having stray cats CHOOSING our backyard but doesn’t offer any help whatsoever; we’re on our own [link, Gazette, CTV, Animosource]). Hopefully, we’ll find someone to adopt them, maybe some refuge willing to take them or find a way to deal with the SPCA. Anyone interested?

Le parc des promesses brisées
J’ai récemment parlé du peu de progrès dans l’aménagement du Parc Frédéric-Back mais je dois avouer, après une petite randonnée à bicyclette autour du parc, que là ma déception est encore plus grande: le secteur Papineau Sud est peut-être ouvert (comme l’annonce le site de la Tohu) mais il n’y a pas grands aménagements et l’accès y est plutôt difficile. Le sentier est encore complètement fermé derrière le Taz, ce qui oblige à un détour par le boulevard Papineau (qui est d’ailleurs partiellement bloqué par des travaux!!!). Comme aménagements on retrouve des bancs et une bordure fait de broche et de pierres (même principe que la signalisation faite de “monolithe” ), un point de vue pas fini, des tables à picnic envahis par les mauvaises herbes et, seul élément vraiment terminé, une petit aire de spectacle (bancs étagés et scène couverte). Moi, j’appelle pas ça “être ouvert.” Je suppose que ça aussi ça va vraiment ouvrir à la fin août… trop tard pour qu’on en profite vraiment! Bravo Montréal!

Progrès au Parc Frédéric-Back
Ou plutôt le peu de progrès. Comme je l’ai mentionné dans mon billet précédent sur ce sujet (“Promenade au Parc”), la nouvelle section était annoncée pour le printemps. L’été est à nos portes et l’accès est toujours fermé. Quand ouvrira-t-on ces barrières? Et bien j’ai eu la réponse récemment sur le site de la Tohu: l’ouverture officielle du parc se fera le 26 août 2017! En fait, le secteur Papineau Sud est déjà ouvert et c’est le secteur Boisé Est qui ouvrira à la fin de l’été. Un peu tard pour vraiment en profiter mais juste à temps pour pouvoir se venter de l’avoir fait dans le cadre des festivités pour le 375e anniversaire de Montréal… Quand au reste du parc, eh bien c’est reporté à 2023!

Promenade au parc
Je prends régulièrement des marches de santé dans le Parc du Complexe Environnemental de Saint-Michel (récemment renommé le Parc Frédéric-Back). J’ai donc pu constater ce printemps le progrès (plutôt lent) dans les différents aménagements des entrées de la nouvelle section (partie sud-est) dont l’ouverture avait été annoncé pour le printemps 2017. Bientôt sûrement (à moins que cela ne soit reporté comme la plupart des grands projets de M. Codère! L’ouverture totale du Parc annoncée pour 2020 est maintenant reporté à 2023!). Absurdity of the day (#02017117)
I feel I was born in a parallel universe with a completely different logic system and then absconded here for some mysterious reasons. This place doesn’t make sense at all to me as nobody seems to follow what I consider to be basic common sense. Here are two examples that I witness daily.
In this part of town, people are waiting for the bus in line from the back to the front or the concept of lining-up seems foreign to them. I know many of them are deeply religious (as they read the Bible or pray on the bus, probably going to church every Sunday) and “Jesus” told them “the last shall be first” but he meant it for the kingdom of Heaven, not here! I can’t stand such hypocrisy: they are supposed to be charitable and humble and they are the first to cut the line, steal your place or hate you for daring to stand your ground (sometimes even accusing you of being racist if you complain)! As an agnostic I feel I have more moral values than most of them.
I also don’t understand how an employer can be so callous and disrespectful toward its employees (the people who are actually making things work): I should not have to fight for compassionate leave (it has nothing to do with the collective bargaining agreement: it’s in the damn labor code!) or to work in difficult and unpleasant conditions as the work place was without any ventilation or air conditioning for several days and the room temperature was neighbouring 24 to 27.5 ? (if we were simply sitting at a desk it would probably be bearable but our work requires to be constantly standing or moving — actually, if the ideal comfort zone is defined as 21-23°C, there is NO maximum Temperature Limit set by the labor code) ! And, to add insult to injury, this week they also used the employees’ room (where we rest and take our meals) to store the stinking floor polishing equipment! It is not enough for the employer to trim our pension (unilaterally changing a negotiated agreement), cut some of our leave, reduce the staff and increase the number of tasks so we have to force the pace until we feel we are on an assembly line, but they must also show us a total lack of respect? And, after that, they still expect their employees to be loyal, enthusiastic and performing? The union is no better because, when we complain, they just do nothing (they are masters of collusion). It is inconceivable, unacceptable, completely outrageous!
I don’t understand how this could be completely normal to other people. I really must be from another world…

Yesterday, document.write(“”); an Hydro-Québec press release announced that their “customers are increasingly satisfied”! Is that so? It is strange, because the customers are paying increasingly more (year after year) for the same damn service (on average each year more than the Canadian consumer price index). Why should they feel more satisfied with that, I ask you!

I guess the quality of the electricity is good (if anyone could quantify that), the service is more reliable, but hydro-electricity is amongst the cheapest energy, most of our infrastructure is already paid for and the company is already making huge profits (over $3-billion). So, where’s the need to increase the rates? Of course, the argument for an increase is that customers from Quebec are paying one of the lowest rates in the country so they shouldn’t complain if H-Q tries to bring them closer to the national average. Also, H-Q blames “an increase in supply costs and the costs resulting from the harsh temperatures of the past two winters” and the fact that production cost for wind energy is much higher. It sounds like corporate excuses.
The last couple of time I had to deal with their customer service I was quite disappointed. When they started installing the new “intelligent” meters, it took a good six months to arrange an appointment for the installation. And, with the next-generation meters, they promised customers would be able to track their daily electricity use and it took over TWO YEARS for that option to become available on their website through the “My Consumption Profile” page! So, no, it would be really absurd for me to be “increasingly satisfied” at all!

Absurdité du jour (#02017052)
Après deux jours de beau temps et de température au dessus de zéro, que vois-je passer hier soir vers onze heure ou minuit? La déneigeuse de trottoir! L’arrondissement est pas capable de déneiger les trottoirs (ni près de chez moi, ni près de la bibliothèque) avant que je parte et arrive au travail le lendemain d’une tempête de neige, mais ils “nettoient” quand il n’y a rien à enlever? Cet arrondissement est vraiment mal géré (comme si on ne le savait pas déjà!). C’est ça que ça donne la sous-traitance!
Je viens tout juste de payer mes taxes municipales et je trouve ça honteux qu’on les gaspilles de la sorte. Nettoyez donc quand ça compte bande d’idiots!

Therefore, it hurts me deeply to see so many people lately who are either so mean that they really don’t care about the wrong they are inflicting to others or that they are so stupid that they don’t even realize the harm that they are inflicting. Isn’t there any good will, any justice, any fairness, any common sense left in the world? It seems that today’s world is governed only by the absurd! Has this farce lasted long enough?

Déneigement des trottoirs
J’approuve totalement cette campagne de sensibilisation pour faciliter le déneigement des trottoirs dans notre arrondissement. Toutefois je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de me sentir insulter par la formulation de ce carton laissé dans ma boîte aux lettres.
N’ayant pas de véhicule, et n’étant donc pas en faute, j’ai trouvé le ton accusateur du carton un peu trop agressif. Le carton aurait été parfait s’il avait été mis sur le pare-brise des véhicules fautifs. Mais dans le cas d’une distribution massive auprès de tous les citoyens, le message aurait dû être formulé “Veuillez à ce que votre véhicule ne nuise pas aux opérations de déneigement!” et non “Votre véhicule nuit actuellement aux opérations de déneigement”… Encore une fois, je ne suis pas trop fier de la stupidité de notre arrondissement.
Je rajouterais qu’il n’y a pas seulement les véhicules stationné trop près du trottoir ou ceux qui dépassent de leur entrée de garage (voir le verso du carton) qui nuisent aux opérations de déneigement. En plus des bicyclettes attachées à des poteaux de signalisation, je vois dans mon coin beaucoup d’autres obstacles possibles comme des abris Tempo qui empiètent presque sur le trottoir (pour être conforme ils devraient être à 50-75 cm du trottoir), de sacs de poubelles déposés directement sur le trottoir ou même la neige empilée sans vergogne sur le trottoir par ceux qui déneigent leur entrées ou leur véhicules!
Malheureusement, les gens n’ont guère de respect pour les règlements, et encore moins pour les pauvres piétons qui doivent naviguer autour de ces obstacles ou sur des trottoirs mal déneigés parce que les chenillettes n’ont pas pu faire leur travail. Utilisez-donc un peu de gros bon sens!

Je n’aime pas trop me plaindre de notre système médical car au moins nous en avons un et il est gratuit. Mais c’est un secret de polichinelle de dire que notre système de santé est malade. Depuis l’été dernier je me méfie beaucoup du notre système de santé. Après m’être retrouvé par deux fois, en rafales rapprochées, à l’urgence, avoir attendu des heures, chaque fois m’être fait rebondir vers une clinique, puis vers un spécialiste — telle une balle de ping pong — puis avoir de la difficulté à voir un médecin pour un suivi: j’en pense peu de bien. Le mieux est de ne jamais être malade. Toutefois, ces derniers temps il semble que plusieurs membres de ma famille doivent souvent visiter les hôpitaux… Et hier, j’avais deux rendez-vous en cliniques, l’un le matin pour mon épouse, et l’autre en après-midi pour moi.

Tickets’ trap
This sign is located at the corner of Saint-Roch and Durocher streets in Montreal’s Parc-Extension borough. It might look like a parking sign, but in fact it indicates that the street is closed one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon (except for local resident, school buses and taxis) to insure the safety of the children arriving at and departing from the nearby school, Barthélemy-Vimont.
It would be a commendable endeavour if it had not been turned into a virtual tickets trap for motorists looking to make their way through the maze of one-ways that characterize Montreal. Each afternoon, there’s a police patrol car waiting on the side of the street for the oblivious motorists who failed to notice the inconspicuous street sign. At least half-a-dozen tickets are given each day!
First, the sign should be more obvious and more explanatory. Second, police are supposed to “Serve and protect.” Like protecting the children and serving the citizens. NOT tell them “just pay the fine, sucker”! They would serve better the community if they would simply put their patrol car across the street to block traffic, or put some sort of temporary barrier, and tell passing motorists “sorry the road is temporarily closed for the children’s protection.”
Just another example of how this city fails to be community friendly. Just use common sense, damn it!

Grave problème de gestion animalière
Hier, document.write(“”); suite à une expérience consternante la semaine précédente, j’ai écrit un courriel à mon Conseiller municipal de quartier afin de lui faire part d’une grave préoccupation concernant la gestion animalière de l’arrondissement:
Cher Monsieur le conseiller,
J’aimerais porter à votre attention un grave problème de gestion animalière. La ruelle derrière mon duplex est envahie par des chats errants et je suppose que c’est le cas de la majorité des ruelles du quartier. Ce n’est pas tant la présence de ces chats errants qui m’embête que les graves lacunes dans leur gestion. En fait, ils mettent un peu de vie dans un milieu urbain parfois trop dénaturé et contribuent à éliminer la vermine (rats, souris, mulots, pigeons, etc.).
Je ne les blâme aucunement pour leur prolifération car ils n’en sont pas responsables. C’est nous, les humains, qui avons créés cette situation en abandonnant des animaux (particulièrement des chats) et les laissant se reproduire librement sans la moindre intervention ni contrôle. Je ne crois pas que ces animaux devraient souffrir inutilement suite à une situation dont ils ne sont pas responsables. Nous devrions tenter de gérer la situation le plus humainement possible mais ce n’est pas le cas: la gestion actuelle n’est ni adéquate, ni humaine.
